Returning to check on fruiting jackfruit trees which may have been abandoned, saw the statue of 李師科 Li Shi-ke serving as a protecting door god 門神 at Wutianchan Shrine 無天禪寺 above Garden City. 無天禪寺 Wutianchan Shrine, commonly known as 李師科廟 LiShike Temple is dedicated to 義盜 "righteous thieves." 李師科 Li Shi-ke is known for being Taiwan's first armed bank robber. In January of 1980, Lee murdered a police officer at the Vatican embassy with a handmade gun to get a better quality revolver. Two years later, on April 14, 1982, he used the pistol to rob the Guting branch of Taiwan Land Bank of 5.3 million NT wearing a wig, baseball cap, and surgical mask and exclaiming: "錢是國家的，命是你們自己的" (The money is the country's, but your fate is your own.) Police arrested the wrong suspect, 王迎先 Wang Ying-hsien 23 days after the robbery after torturing a confession from him. Wang died jumping from the Xiulang Bridge 秀朗橋 into the Xindian River 新店溪 as he was leading police to the location of the stolen money and weapon. Lee was arrested hours after Wang's death and admitted to the crime under torture. Li became know as "Taiwan's Robin Hood" after the slight old man explained to reporters that he robbed the bank as a societal protest against the moneyed elite and that the money was to allow a friend's daughter to attend college. Following the robbery, customers entering banks were prohibited from wearing surgical masks or motorcycle helmets and legal reforms were introduced to help prevent false confessions and torture, including giving suspects right to a lawyer during questioning.
