We attend Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) at 7:30 PM at the Sydney Opera House. 2nd row seats provide clear vantage to the orchestra below the stage. Georges Bizet's opera, written for late nineteenth century Paris entranced with the exotic orient, takes us to the land of Ceylon where the old gods still reign. Better known for his life opus, Carmen, Bizet presents the mysterious, veiled priestess who has come to pray for the village of fishermen. Chief Zurga promises the priestess a pearl if she remains chaste, but death if she violates her purity. But Zurga and his childhood friend Nadir had loved the priestess Leila as youths.
